I am super happy that I found this game.  I have it running on Ubuntu MATE on my Thelio currently, and working well.  Here are some observations from my first few days with it:

As others have noted, the user interface can appear very tiny on a high-resolution monitor.  An option to scale it 2× would be appreciated.

The first couple of games I played located my HQ right close to the enemy AI, and he immediately attacked and overwhelmed me.  This was a shock, as I had thought that in the original Settlers II game untrained troops were very poor attackers, and this type of attack would have been very costly to him.  Instead his untrained attackers seemed to engage my untrained defenders on an even basis, which I had no way to answer at that early stage of the game.  (In the original there were some situations where one could attack at the start of the game, but it was something of a desperate ploy.)

My beginning stock includes some men called "charcoal burner".  I am not familiar with these guys, and I don't see any option to produce a building they can work.  Is this a feature that has never (yet) been implemented?  I thought maybe they could be used to produce "coal" from large quantities of wood.

I played a 2-player map called "Demo V016" which starts the players on two islands.  I assumed we could build ships to invade the other's territory.  However, I explored the entire island and was unable to locate any spot where I could build a harbor.  It seems there is no way for the players to reach one another and complete the game on this map?

Oh, I almost forgot. . .

The default game speed seems very fast to me.  To play the same speed as original Settlers II, I have to select "Very Slow" when starting a new game.  This starts the game with a red "3" in the upper-right.  And that's OK.  However. . .  When I change the speed using the V key, I can never cycle back around to red 3 again.  The slowest speed that I can return to is red 2.  Am I misunderstanding how this works somehow, I wonder?

As we do not have the original AI, we use a custom AI which is more agressive than the original AI. In most cases, if you have less defending soldiers than the AI has attacking soldiers, the AI will attack. Also the AI will always attack the HQ if in range. This makes smaller maps like Toe to Toe harder than in the original.

In short: it's an addon you have to activate

It's not really possible to complete the map, it wasn't either in the original. You can however enable sea attacks and reach the other side. Just checked, there is a harbor spot, you may blocked it yourself.

That actually is a bug, looks like the slowest speed is 80ms per GF via host screen but via V (or +/-) you can only get back to 70
