Hi, I started playing the original Roman campaign in RttR and I am stuck on the fifth mission "In the wasteland". As soon as
I meet the enemy tribes, they swarm me with golden helmet soldiers and rush me so hard that I can't do anything but retreat.
Is there any trick to this mission?

In the original game, I had no problems winning this mission.

If I find the time I can check and test if I can find a way - maybe the original had one sided pacts

I am quite sure that this mission is unbeatable, and I wonder if there isn't a bug in the area of attack. I just built an
outpost quite far away from the enemy border, and he was still able to send 29 golden helmet soldiers against me. This
simply did not happen in the original game.

Checked it and yes, sadly this mission suffers from the same problem as some other missions: we do not have one sided pacts yet:

But, challenge accepted, will try to find a way on how to win this one :)

Hey, although it's hard and one probably requires some luck, I managed to do it: https://youtube.com/live/cA9seBzkzG4 maybe it helps you to watch it

I am amazed. I really did not expect you to win this one. Thanks for showing me that it is possible

It still feels like you need luck to hold off red long enough - maybe my fast expansion helped by tricking him to build more fortresses. Maybe it's possible to rush him, so you'd only have to deal with yellow, but that feels quite risky

I managed to complete this mission as well, although I employed a somewhat cheesy tactic. I planted trees at choke points,
built catapults behind the tree wall, and waited until both of the enemies exhausted their armies.

A genuine question: Which gameplay feels better? The original where the AI would not attack you unless you did or our (current) version where you need to employ some "tactics"? Both have Pros and Cons in my opinion.

The new gameplay is much better, of course, but it is also extremely challenging. As soon as the enemy sees an opening, they
begin a blitzkrieg all the way to my HQ. I continued the campaign and really enjoyed mission VI, but then came mission VII,
and I am stuck again.

Please accept another challenge to beat Mission VII - Die Schlange. If I see that it can be beaten, it will boost my morale
to try to do it myself

Iam watching this at the moment. Thanks

About your question: Its a bit difficult to answer with a generel preference.

The maps arent designed for this. Also the story give this alibi "peace treaty" plot :D  They are neutral, but dont give you access to the portals, so we have to invade later. For story, thats ok, but it changes the map completly when this neutrality isnt given from the start in the rttr version.

But as you said, maybe its possible later to use such settings for mapeditor or configuration.

Either way, great work!  Oh and, its a hardcore challenge for a lot of players. I will try it next weekend.

@Radegast: Will do a full stream of this, did not because I don't have much time and only wanted to try something. My initial Idea for The Snake would be to fall back and just keep some bridge head so I could attack later. But then I check my resources and one has 2 coins and 15 gold, which means you can have 17 generals quite early - so I just rushed yellow, blocked him from getting gold and even stole his gold. So at that point I think it's pretty hard to lose since I still can get the islands and have no economy going yet.

@Sejinessa: Well, never read the original story if I'm honest but remember something like they are not hostile but we need to go to the gate. Thanks for the insight :)

Wait, something is not right. My map looks like this:

@Spike do you use the original map? I had to use the one from the Campaign_OriginalRoman repository because of this issue:

Ups, wrong mission - but I still remember that one to be hard. Mixed them up, going to try yours when I find the time, but my memory tells me, that I had to squeeze  in left and ignore yellow

You were right. I let the yellow be and concentrated on the left enemy until I reached the gate. I am starting to get the
hang of this. Man, this is so much better than the original game.
