As we about all know RttR has a graphics issue, making it dependant of original game files and not being able to distribute the original game files. New People is a nice beginning for a new set of original graphics that RttR can distribute, so I spent some time yesterday to get something else going on: a new texture set. This here is a suggestion for a new Greenland texture.

- The grass is an almost exact copy from Patch 1.52, but made lighter.
- Lava animates just a little bit, I think it looks much better than the original!
- The three additional "hidden" lava textures are also used, nothing spectacular there though.
- Water is changed as well (Patch 1.52 didn't change it)
- I didn't test this texture with RttR, but it works with original game just fine :)

What still needs to be done:
- Road textures need a bit of tweaking.
- Edge textures could use some more work to look different?
- I guess palette & gouraud shading files must be customized as well.

I really like the lava ;) looks cool, so, what are these addioninal graphics for? would it be possible to set one black to have an "barrier" ?
But the mountains :S don't like them, they look like dirty ground for me but well - nice one anyway ;)

Based on feedback:

- Less-brown mountain, less contrast
- Darker Desert/Steppe/Savanna (no longer glowing white, but still lighter than original desert)
- Improved Swamp
- Adjusted Snow & Desert edge

But you didnt answered my question ;(
And I liked the old mountains more and I think the swamp needs a bit more water.

1) You can use the graphics as replacement for original graphics in S2.

OR

2) Future RttR graphics for no dependancy of original game files.

No barrier can be set. In RttR yes, but not in S2 (although you could dedicate one of the extra lava tiles for black and it would give the effect, just that it would appear red in minimap).

I've done more adjustments but I won't post a new version for a while I think.

well but my question was, what for these addional graphics are?

---

Merri am 21.08.2011 23:28 #8048

The three smaller textures at the bottom are extra "hidden" lava. They appear as lava in minimap and the texture also behaves like lava.

My current future idea for them is to make lava flows, ie. lava that flows to left, lava that flows to right and lava that flows down. So you could make rivers of lava.

Currently it is only possible to use these textures via direct file manipulation by using a hex editor (hex values 14, 15, 16 = decimal values 20, 21, 22). RttR does not currently support them at all, because this information was found out by me only recently. Original S2 & original map editor display them.

For reference:

Here is a lava flow test from current (unreleased) version of the texture set:

The flow still needs some adjustments, but overall I think it works quite well!

The only problem is that S2 also adds desert borders on each lava against different kind of lava texture. That is a limitation when designing stuff. Luckily all other textures have a priority over lava.

The solid color texture is a modified 0x11 (17). You can only have one color for it so why not make it lava... have to hide it behind objects or something to make it easier to look at! :D

Nice... That way you can also simulate waterfalls.... Epic

Merri am 26.08.2011 06:14 #8290

Could simulate, although the unused textures are marked as lava (ie. minimap displays them in red color and can't build roads near them).

Hi there, new here just registered - found the thread via your webpage/blog. Never heard of BttR nor even knew that S2 was being modded these days, it's been years for me! Just wanted to say thanks and WOW for the great work :D

Thanks! I guess I'm almost the only one still modding the original game (I mostly do it as a result of figuring out new stuff from the files), RttR is newly written code entirely from scratch and not really modding as such, but S2 anyway :)

Indeed, this remake is quite exciting. Upon me also discovering fan-made campaigns on some German sites, just wanted to say well done as I will be using this while I replay my childhood :P

Yup, I have plans on adding FANpaign and 2NDpaign to settlers2.net, but before I do that I'll probably have a relook at how they're packed and see if I can improve the English language in them. If I recall correctly the text was quite bad when I tried them out.

Ye basically both campaigns were german campaigns... I believe I've also once heard of a 3rdpaign. Not sure if it ever got released though.

@jonusc: Welcome to the forums...

EDIT: Nope it seems it never got released there were only 2 missions created which also never got released. However there is another fanmade campaign out there it is called

Oktavianus' Reise = Oktavians Journey

http://www.jnsoftware.de/Siedler2/download/SiedlerKampagne.zip Guess They are also all only in german.

Another Scenario mission you have to find 5 magic documents.

And one more scenario. In this mission you crashed with your ship on an unknown Island after a heavy storm.

Atlantis a map with several new objects will take back to the days of that old culture.

Thanks down23 :)

Yeah I am still digging myself, I have found a few dead links that still happen to be archived on Wayback Machine - but the downloads are not archives :( google searching for the ZIP names presents no leads, but I still have a few things to try...

Hmm indeed, I installed the unofficial 1.52 patch and upon inspection noticed that the only changes are the title screen logo, the texture/tale map (but yours is better!) and the German help descriptions. Thus I have started translating them into the English Help descriptions for my own little use :)

I have also made a title screen from on your fantastic artwork Merri, thanks for the tips with the LBM/PBM conversion stuff. I am also a die-hard fan of PaintShop Pro haha. Anywho, I just stuck with the original palette for the title screen - am yet to discover the colour indexes used for the font and buttons so the dithering is quite poor at the moment.

Depending on what you plan to do next Merri, I might soon start redrawing some trees or buildings - and/or integrate some already done works in these fields - and create a "1.53" patch. Also made some other small changes like renaming "Line and hook" to "Fishing rod", and "Helper" to "Serf" but that's it for now, was thinking of renaming "Crucible" to "Goldcast" but I dunno about that. I just remember upon first playing S2 I was thinking "What the heck is a Crucible?" Heh...

Anywho, I have taken us off topic :) I may PM you here or make a comment on your page soon Merri, in regards to all this. I'm having quite a bit of constructive fun with it.

Great to see that the site has been helpful! I've actually been planning on developing an online localization tool for the game, but as other stuff eventually got my interest as well I've put that project back. I have already all the original game's strings in a database in German, English, French and Finnish, directly read from the game files and converted to UTF-8. I just haven't done any PHP code to access & modify that information.

As of now I also opened a #settlers2 channel @ freenode.net about modding and reverse engineering the original game as well as for development of settlers2.net of course :) Easy way to access the channel is to use Freenode Webchat.

For me the offtopic doesn't matter as long as we're talking about S2!

Any way, I said the grass texture's a little too repetitive. Other than that, it's really great, especially the lava!
