First of all, I'd like to say hello to whole RttR community.

When I first saw your project (about 2 weeks ago), I was extremely stunned by what you were able to achieve! The game mechanics are almost complete, when you play it you get that S2 feeling and this game is playable in both solo/multi game modes. It's cool, because there are no more games like this nowadays and Ubi's 10th anniversary isn't good enough (and it doesn't work well on my laptop too :) ). And bless you for different catapult sprites! :D I always wondered why they were the same for all races.

Besides playing oldschool games I do also some programming and as a semi-experienced C/C++ programmer I would like to somehow contribute to this project. Perhaps I'm blind or something but unfortunately i don't see any Developer FAQ or some sort of introduction for developers. Could you summarize current project status and current development focus?

I'm quite new to S2 internals, so I have to ask you if there exists some kind of documentation for filetypes etc., from which I could get neccessary info to start reading the code and adding things?

From what I've learned so far, the main focus right now is to make stable net play. But I don't think it's a good idea for me to make some changes on this fields without reading and fully understanding current net code. Before I do so, I'd like to write some plugins, implement campaigns and/or other harmless activities. :)

Thanks in advance for any additional info. I'm not a native English speaker, neither German, I know my English is not perfect, sorry for that. I don't know if it's correct category on this board, but I couldn't find any more suitable for it.

RTTR-Doofie
hello Kain :)

i like to read this and i think your english is good, much better then my english :P

the project is unfortunately stucking in the moment, i think we need new developers to revive the project
i also sometimes look in the source code to search and correct some little bugs, but im a programming beginner, so its difficult for me ^^ i'm better in making graphics, but this is less important, then it is only for additional things :D

you should join to our irc-channel ;)

Hello Kain!

Welcome to the community first of all. So ok from what I understood you want to contribute!

Have you tried bugtracker? besides the name its the launchpad with all the files that are attached to the coding process (I think). And you might find some information there that you might need to start developing.

You can also PM FloSoft who is the head-developer (correct me if I'm wrong), and he will reply to you when he has the time for it, which I don't know when.

Another way to try and figure out whats going on in the development process is to jump in the IRC on good hours and try and talk to someone about information.

Hope this was helpfull!

Btw, what is a native language?

Thanks for a warm welcome and some info. About my native language, I'm from Poland. You're right, I'll try to look at the buglist and try to fix something while reading the code.

I was unsure if there is any documentation about RttR code structure etc., but I see I'll just have to read the sources :)

I've visited IRC once but unfortunately only 2 ppl were active at that time. But that's ok, I just have to visit it more often.

Zitat von KaiN:

Hi. :)

Zitat:

No, you're not blind, there is no such thing. Currently no one is programming anything, as far as I know. The two main programmers (Oliver and FloSoft) are both inactive. So there's also no "current development focus". Sometimes someone fixes a bug, but thats all.

Zitat:

I'm quite new to S2 internals, so I have to ask you if there exists some kind of documentation for filetypes etc., from which I could get neccessary info to start reading the code and adding things?

There was a page with some information about the s2 filetypes... But I can't find it on the current webpage... Anyone?
Other documentation, aside from comments in the code itself, does not exist. Sadly, most of the comments in the code are german as well :/

It would be great if you could do some programming for the project. There are some people in the community with interesting ideas ;) However, you may need some time to figure out the code, because there's no real good documentation - sorry.

Hi - I started looking at the code a week ago. Took me a while to start the first debug version because I ran into every possible obstacle - if you have any questions up to that point I might be able to help now.

I used the remaining time to change the ai to be able to work at low/very low resource settings but also some more general things - I also fixed some bugs that crashed the game when I wanted to test the new ai.

My current problem: I want to build a non-debug version and have no idea how or even where to start :)
debug version problem: it's slow... I have to look at water to get decent fps to not lag out the game and some of the ai changes require quite a few gameframes. Also I have no way to play multiplayer with other players who dont have visual studio.

solution: copy the s25client.exe, sdl.dll, sdlmixer.dll, mikmod.dll, libiconv2.dll to the solution dir (exe from win32/vs2010/release rest from contrib/full contrib "search")

Well, can't you just set in vs that the build is not debug, that it is release?
