Inspired by the revival of the wooden fortress I think a thread for collecting screens/information about beginning/development of Settlers 2 would be nice. Both as source of inspiration and just for the fun.
Here two screens I found after a little searching:

Does anybody know how those wells worked without worker in an adjacent house? :)

And a screen form first playable demo (took by me):

Horses instead of donkeys and watchtowers were occupied by soldiers :D The demo is quite buggy, but it hasn't only graphical differences to final version, eg attack options are more like those in settler 1.
You can download the demo here (thx to ~s2 Zocker).

Ooh, that demo version reveals the original plans for the extra lava textures for Wasteland! There is also a weird green "poison" texture that I don't know the index of, if it still exists in the latest version of the game.

Why don't you guys and I mean everyone who replied in here except me go (since im no modder) as a united modder team and write blue byte some mail at their support service line... Ask them for any old data they may still have stored on their old backup disks and hard drives ask for the source code as well... I think the Blue byte support was always great who knows maybe the chances aren't that slim at all.

And it wouldn't be the first case where a once comercial game gets further developed by fans. See Warzone2100 for example.

Tell them about this huge mod project here about your intentions etc. who knows maybe you guys are lucky.

We (referred as RttR-Team) were already at BlueBytes working site.
And they will never release the grafics, because they were bought by Ubisoft.
We talked about copyright, the grafics and we played "The Settlers 7"(looked fantastic
at this time but than Ubi came with their DRM)! We were told that Ubisoft has some
lawyers in france and if we wanna have some of the old stuff, we should ask there for a
permission. If think that would be more cost than use.

@Merri: thank you very much, very nice and informative article ;)

Spike am 29.08.2011 17:09 #8362

well, they were Generals ;)

Wikipedia said no to a RttR page, not relevant.

He means starting up your own wiki, not just a single page in Wikipedia.

Launchpad "wiki" links to http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Spiele/Die_Siedler_II

That is the only RttR related wiki I can find with Google.
